  • Make sure you understand the tax laws and penalties!
  • General Information
  • The penalty is calculated in one of two
    ways: either as a percentage of your total
    household adjusted gross income or a flat
    rate, whichever is greater. For tax year
    2017, the penalty is 2.5% of your total
    household adjusted gross income,
    or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child, up
    to a maximum of $2,085.

2. AHCCCS/Low-Income Programs

Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) is Arizona’s Medicaid agency that offers health care programs to serve Arizona residents.

    • Individuals must meet certain income and other requirements to obtain services

3. KidsCare

KidsCare is BACK!

a. What is KidsCare?

  • KidsCare is Arizona’s version of the federally created Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). It was recently reinstated after it had been frozen since 2010, when it was cut due to budget crisis during the Great Recession.
  • AHCCCS estimates approximately 30,000 Arizona children may enroll in KidsCare coverage!

b. How does the program work?

  • Parents insuring their children in KidsCare pay a monthly premium depending on their household income.
  • Monthly premiums can range from $10 for one child in a household at the lower income range and up to $70 for multiple children in households at the upper income range.
  • The annual family income for a household of four at 133% FPL (Federal Poverty Level) is $32,319 and at 200% FPL is $48,600.
  • KidsCare offers the full array of AHCCCS benefits. Eligible children will receive their coverage through health plans contracted with the AHCCCS Administration.
  • Families will have their eligibility conducted by the Department of Economic Security (DES) as part of a holistic eligibility determination.

4. SNAP (formerly food stamps)

SNAP provides healthy food to low-income families with children and vulnerable adults. Simply put, SNAP helps low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health.

    • Eligibility is based on your household’s resources, income and other requirements such as residence, citizenship or qualified non-citizen status. To see if you qualify, call Keogh at (602) 266-0397.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Cash Assistance (CA) program provides temporary cash benefits and supportive services to the neediest of Arizona’s children and their families. The program helps these families meet their basic needs for well-being and safety and serves as their bridge back to self-sufficiency.

6. Medicare/Medicare Savings Program

You can get help from your state paying your Medicare premiums if you are elderly or disabled and. In some cases, Medicare Savings Programs may also pay Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments if you meet certain conditions

  1. Don’t qualify for AHCCCS or The Health Insurance Marketplace?

Arizona offers Sliding Fee Scale Providers for General Care, Behavioral Health, and Dental care.

    • What is a Sliding Fee Clinic? A Sliding Fee Schedule (SFS) is used by medical providers offering discounted fees for services to persons without health or dental insurance.

9. Dental

a. Medicaid/AHCCCS AHCCCS only pays for dental care for a medical condition for members who are 21 years of age and older. The medical condition must be acute pain, infection, or a broken jaw.

You can get dental coverage 2 ways: as part of a health plan, or by itself through a separate, stand-alone dental plan.

    • Important: You can only buy a dental plan through the federal Marketplace when you enroll in a health plan at the same time.
